Washington DC, December 17: In a major development, Elon Musk-led social media giant, Twitter on Friday (December 16) abruptly suspended the handle belonging to its desi challenger Koo. Koo’s co-founder and CEO Radhakrishna gave the information about the latest development saying no reason was given for the suspension.
In a social media post, he also alleged that the Elon Musk-led-American social media also suspended the account of Mastodon, another rival of Twitter.
Koo’s co-founder and CEO Radhakrishna tweeted: “One of the Koo handles on Twitter just got banned. For what?! Because we compete with Twitter? So? Mastodon also got blocked today. How is this free speech and what world are we living in? What’s happening here @elonmusk?”
Co-founder Mayank Bidawatka expressed concern over 10-15 other Twitter handles belonging to the Indian social media platform. He told Economic Times that Twitter gave no explanation for suspending @kooeminence and that the company will write to Twitter about it. He added Koo has multiple accounts to handle queries and respond to grievances from India and Brazil.
Although Elon Musk said he wanted the Jack Dorsey-founded platform to be a free-speech bastion, the new company management under the billionaire has been banning dissident voices. This week itself Twitter suspended the accounts of several journalists who reported on Musk and had tweeted about the Tesla CEO’s tiff with a college student who ran a Twitter handle that tracked the private jet belonging to Musk.
The account @ElonJet was banned shortly after the company in a freshly-minted rule said it won’t tolerate accounts sharing live location.
Among those affected by the ban were Ryan Mac of New York Times, Donnie O’Sullivan CNN and Drew Hardwell of the Washington Post. Also, Intercept's Micha Lee, Mashable's Matt Binder, and independent journalists Aaron Rupar, and Tony Webster found themselves locked out of their accounts abruptly.
