Tuning and modification culture is very much present in the motorcycle world but it has been limited to that realm for a while now in India at least. Enthusiasts’ performance scooters has been a segment that hadn’t really been explored a lot in the past since scooters are seen more as practical tools rather than enthusiasts’ weapons. Yamaha aims to change this with their Aerox scooter which they launched a short while back. I was so excited about the launch of a proper affordable performance oriented scooter that I actually made a video about it as soon as it was launched which you can watch by clicking on the embedded link below.
The recipe for the Aerox is fairly straightforward. It’s a scooter with no footboard to keep your stuff so you have a more motorcycle style footing around the protruding spine unit, performance oriented dynamics and an amazing 155CC engine from Yamaha’s extremely popular and capable R15 sports bike although it has been detuned a bit towards a more scooter-ish format. The scooter itself is on the pricier side of things; it costs 1.3 lakh rupees ex-showroom but for people looking for a fast and capable scooter for a reasonable price, there’s nothing else quite like the Aerox.
There’s a company called Dismotech who have released a performance kit for the Aerox for those who truly want to take their scooter to the next level. This kit is absolutely crazy but also quite confusing.
First of all, it costs Rs. 98,000 which is uncomfortably close to the base price of the scooter itself. Also the kit contains so speed enhancing mods, which is slightly baffling because it does cost a pretty penny.
Anyways this is what you get for your close to one lakh rupees Aerox kit:
1. Upside down front forks
2. Rear monoshock
3. Dual disc brakes up front, single disc at the back
4. Radial master cylinder
5. 120mm front tyre
6. 150mm rear tyre
7. New alloy wheels
8. New undertail unit
9. Carbon fibre tyre hugger
This is a list of quite specialized parts which do certain things very well. Looking at the list confirms that this new modified Aerox will most likely handle better, slow down better and stop better. In addition to this it will have a totally revamped ride quality; whether that will be more or less comfortable it’s impossible to say right now having not ridden it but looking at the overall aesthetic and purpose of the kit it’s looking to be a race inspired unit. If that’s the case it’s a bit of a questionable choice since we don’t exactly have a ton of easily accessible smooth roads in all parts of the country. In any case it’s pretty cool to see manufacturers getting affordable fast scooters here since it creates a new and appealing segment of vehicles not only for people who ride scooters but for motorcyclists looking for a non-geared fast runabout as well.
It’s an extremely expensive kit which Dismotech are offering and it won’t make sense for most people to make that purchase, myself included but it does open up a world of possibilities for other people wanting to make their Aeroxes and other scooters just that bit more special. I hope other manufacturers will take inspiration from Yamaha’s success with the Aerox and start bringing in their affordable performance scooters as well. Pricing and performance per price is key here so if other brands can nail that Yamaha will have a fight on their hands and consumers will have an amazing amount of choice as well.
