India is all set to make history as it seeks to achieve a milestone of attempting a soft land its spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 on the south polar region of the moon on Wednesday, August 23, at 18:04 hours, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said on Sunday.
Where is it going to land
ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 lander-rover-based mission is proposed to land in the plateau between two craters Manzinus and Boguslawsky and a third Simpelious in an area between 68 and 70° S and 31 and 33° E coordinates near the moon’s south pole.
Additionally, an alternate landing site has also been proposed in the west of Moretus crater (∼114 km diameter; coordinates: 70.6° S, 6.2° W), within an area between 68 and 70° S and 16 and 18° W.
What going to happen during landing?
On August 23, during the last 15 minutes of its mission, the Chandrayaan-3 lander from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will need to execute a crucial technical manoeuvre. This manoeuvre involves transitioning from a high-speed horizontal position to a vertical one, which is essential to enable a smooth and controlled descent onto the lunar surface.
'Moon landing will be postponed to August 27 if factors are unfavourable'
The space agency will make a decision on whether or not it will be appropriate to land Chandrayaan-3 two hours before the landing is actually scheduled. "In case, if any factor appears to be not favourable, then we will land the module on the Moon on August 27. No problem should occur and we will be able to land the module on August 23," he, however, added.

On Monday, the ISRO was able to establish two-communication between the Chandrayaan 3 Lander Module and the Chandrayaan 2 Orbiter, which is still orbiting.
Chandrayaan-3 successfully completed its final 'deboosting' (the process of slowing down) operations on Sunday morning. The Lander Module would now undergo internal checks, the space agency said. “The second and final deboosting (slowing down) operation has successfully reduced the LM orbit to 25 km x 134 km. The module would undergo internal checks and await the sun-rise at the designated landing site. The powered descent is expected to commence on August 23, 2023, around 1745 Hrs IST,” ISRO said in a post on 'X' (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.
