Texas, March 04: Elon Musk-headed space company SpaceX's SN-10 prototype successfully landed in its third test flight at about 5.15 pm in Texas. However, the rocket exploded about eight minutes after landing.

The test saw the spacecraft fly up more than six miles (9.7km) and conduct a “belly flop” maneuver before righting itself to land vertically with a slight til. The reason for the explosion of the prototype was not immediately clear. However, it was being referred “Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly” by the company.

The test marks a major milestone for the company as it has earlier two previous high-altitude flights of Starship prototypes ended in fiery explosions, before the landing.

The rocket was the third prototype of SpaceX's Starship. The last two prototypes namely the SN8 and SN9 reached the high altitudes in December 2020 and February 2021 but they slammed into the ground at Boca Chica in Texas and got exploded. Each of these three test flights lasted for around six minutes.

Starship consists of two elements, a 165-foot-tall (50 meters) spacecraft called Starship and a giant rocket known as Super Heavy, both of which are designed to be fully and rapidly reusable. The system also comprises a passenger-carrying spacecraft. It will serve as the second stage as well as the in-space long-duration orbital spaceship.

SpaceX is developing Starship to get people and payloads to the moon, Mars, and other distant destinations, and to fly any other missions the company requires.
