The announcement was made as part of AI Day, a series of tech talks hosted by Tesla in California to recruit machine learning talent. Speaking at Tesla’s AI Day event, Musk said the robot could have “profound implications for the economy” by plugging gaps in the workforce created by labor shortages. He said it was important that the new machine was not “super expensive”.

Musk said the robot, code-named “Optimus,” is based on the same chips and sensors that Tesla’s cars use for self-driving features. It’s five foot eight inches tall, and has a screen where the head is for useful information, Musk said.

Tesla is designing it so that humans will be able to run away from the robot or overpower it. Slides displayed by Tesla on Thursday show that Autopilot cameras will be installed in the bot’s head. It will be able to carry 45 pounds, lift 150 pounds, and weigh 125 pounds. It can run 5 miles per hour, Musk said.

The Tesla Bot will stand at 5'8" and will weigh approximately 125 pounds. Tesla said the Bot would have cameras for eyes and would use its self-driving software to navigate its surroundings. The company also said it would have a new Dojo chip — a supercomputer focused on machine learning. It will use much of the same tech that is found in its car including the full self-driving hardware.

The Tesla Bot is designed for "dangerous, repetitive, and boring tasks" like picking up groceries or fixing a car. It is would be able to handle tasks such as attaching bolts to cars with a spanner or picking up groceries at stores.
