New Delhi, July 28: In the major development, India has again rescheduled its third mission to the moon Chandrayaan-3 due to the COVID effect. According to Union minister Jitendra Singh, India will launch its third mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-3, during the quarter of 2022.

In a written response to a question in Lok Sabha, he said, "Chandrayaan-3 is likely to be launched during the third quarter of 2022 assuming normal work-flow henceforth."

He also added that the realization of Chandrayaan-3 involves various processes including finalization of configuration, subsystems realization, integration, spacecraft level detailed testing, and a number of special tests to evaluate the system performance on Earth.

"The realisation progress was hampered due to the COVID-19 pandemic," he said. However, all works that were possible in the work from home mode were taken up even during the lockdown periods. Chandrayaan-3 realisation resumed after commencement of unlock period and is in matured stage of realisation, he said.

The third mission was announced just a few months after the Vikram lander aboard Chandrayaan-2 mission crash-landed on the lunar surface just 2.1 km from its goal in September 2019.

The mission was initially scheduled for late 2020 or early 2021, however, the pandemic affected the schedule for manufacturing the modules.
